Assalaamu alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh
Allah first brought to my attention the lessons of Shaykh Abdur-Rahman ibn Yusuf sometime around 2002, when I downloaded a couple of recordings about the Tahajjud prayer. His remarkably lucid, unpretentious words placed in my heart a new and earnest spiritual ambition that added to my religious practice. One thing that struck me about his manner of teaching was its simple presentation and accessibility. His lectures were available on the Web at no charge, and were also free of superfluous hype. Furthermore, to the best of my knowledge at the time, he was the only Hanafi mufti who spoke contemporary-style English who was making his lessons available on the Internet. It was easy for me to listen to him because of the way he combined convincing knowledge and seriousness about a topic with a relaxed and occasionally humorous rhetorical style. Furthermore, an older, well-known scholar whose works are in the canon of English-language translations of Islamic classical texts approved of my benefiting from Mufti Abdur-Rahman.
This has not been difficult to do thanks to the Zam Zam Academy Web site, with its consistently high quality recordings on topics including Zakat, Trade, Fasting, Friendship, and Aqida, among others, presented in a thorough and easy-to-understand manner. For those who may be unfamiliar with Shaykh Abdur-Rahman, it’s worth pointing out that he is able to comment on aspects of the cultures of English-speaking societies like England and the U.S. that would be relevant to any Muslim living in these places. Incredibly, Allah has also made the shaykh – in my experience – reasonably accessible and willing to answer numerous questions over the years, whether by e-mail, in person at a retreat in the U.S., or by telephone.
Finally, there is White Thread Press, which publishes many of Shaykh Abdur-Rahman’s amazing books, such as Fiqh al-Imam, Provisions for the Seeker, and Al Fiqh Al-Akbar, as well as indispensable CD sets like Saviours of the Islamic Spirit, which are among the highest quality publications I have seen on any topic published anywhere.
In short, Shaykh Abdur-Rahman ibn Yusuf’s work is an invaluable blessing that I hope will become even more accessible to all who thirst for knowledge that satisfies.
